When you think of fish, sustainability and community might not be the first two words you think of. However, for this fish project, they are the main goals New Day New Life hopes to achieve.
The fish raceway in Angkor Chum is a partnership with a family that lives there. This partnership was initiated to build relationships, create a sustainable income, and provide a future food source for multiple families in each village we serve. The family takes great care of the fish and is eager to see their fish farm grow.
For the farm, the fish swim in a raceway system. Made for This Fabrication of Cambodia helped install the system. There are multiple benefits to using the raceway.
First, the raceway lets you use the entire volume of the pond. It also adds oxygen and water flow to increase fish growth as they swim around the pond. Therefore, we have plenty of room for the fish to keep swimming.
Beyond space for the fast-growing fish, the raceway offers a contained area to store the fish. If the fish source is an ocean or lake, you can’t easily feed the fish or administer medicine consistently. However, the raceway does give you that benefit letting the producer monitor the fish’s growth and general health easily.
The fish farm project is still in an early growth stage but will hopefully continue to strengthen! Keep following along here with the development of the farm. For more information on the raceway system, please watch the video above.
